In a first for German politics, a Green state premier will lead a state government. Winfried Kretschmann, a teacher by profession and a Catholic, is set to become leader of the state government in Baden-Württemberg. After winning almost 25% of the vote, the Greens expect to form a coalition with the Social Democrats, who they beat into third place. But do the Greens have the right makeup to become a genuine broad-based party?
